Give sb the benefit of the doubt: To believe sb good about sth, rather than sth bad, when you have the possibility of doing either; To decide that you will believe someone, even though you are not sure that what the person is saying is true. As in Something didn't seem quite right, but I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt.
