Our material wealth is on the rise during the past decades as a result of the predatory nature of mankind, materialism hasbeen gaining more and more popularity, which give rise to the thrivingcapitalism and consolidated social hierarchy, the status gap between weearthlings has become more apparent, social gatherings and offline activitiesdeclined significantly due to the isolation of the rapid growth of the walls, blocks and yards.

In the face of the thriving digital economy, chances of mingling and rambling has been cut back dramatically in terms of frequencyand duration, there’s a huge likelihood that we don’t even know the name of theperson who lives next door, the clock is ticking and our sight are blurring.

Our body is traveling around enclosed cubiclesranging from metro to carriage, to office pods. Our eyes are glued to varioussize of screens, overwhelmed by countless offerings and dealings.

Little by little, we’re trapped into a hypocriticaland insensitive world where distant relatives and nearby neighbors are none ofour concern.

At first glance, the Desperate Housewiveswere seemed to enjoy having each other around. But if we take a deep dive intothe following episode, the reality, as Bree, the OCD-driven perfectionistpointed out: "How much do we really want to know about our neighbors?”
Their best friend kicked off the series by committinga suicide owing to some dark family secret. As we can tell from episode one,Susan’s husband Karl committed an adultery, Lynette’s husband Tom is innocentof his wife’s desperation and frustration, Bree's husband Rex hated her gutsand sowed he will no long tolerate the detergent commercial and Gaby cheated onher husband as a result of his inattentiveness and arrogance.

My point being: we all have our secrets, someare as innocent as honest mistakes, and some are referred to us as skeletons inour closet. Often, we are a closed book to others and the same may applies tothe other side as well. At the end of the day, as Mary Alice Young, thenarrator puts it: "Loneliness is something my friends understood all toowell."——After all, we’re ultimately alone.
